Ellett Valley Beef Co. is a small, family-operated farm in the mountains of Southwest Virginia near Blacksburg. We've been raising beef cattle continuously since 1975. Our mission is to produce healthy, tasty grass-fed beef for the local market in a responsible, sustainable fashion, and to propagate quality Red Devon seedstock cattle.

OUR PROUCTION PROTOCOLS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Humane Animal Treatment, no exceptions
Grassfed and grass-finished, without grain
Hormone free – no growth stimulating hormones!!
Antibiotic free – no feed-grade antibiotics
Chemical free
Herbicide free
Pesticide free*
Cattle must be born and raised on our farms
Fresh pasture for the cattle daily – managed grazing

*When the face-flies are really bad in the summer we do use a very limited amount of organic and chemical fly repellent. We can’t stand to see the cows suffer from flies. Antibiotics may be used to relieve the suffering of the rare animal that gets an ailment. This is a tiny amount that will not enter the food chain.

THE BEEF HERD

Our herd consists of Red Angus and Black Angus crossbred cows. We select for moderate-framed cows that can thrive on grass alone with very little supplemental feed. Our cows must raise a big healthy calf every year, maintain their body condition, and they must be of docile temperament. Calm, contented cows equal better, tender beef.

The beef cows are bred to our Pure Red Devon Herd Sire, Red Dude, and most of the beef we will produce in 2010 and beyond will be Devon beef.

THE PURE DEVON HERD

"Pure Devon Bred Heifers For Sale"

We believe that the Devon breed, one of the oldest breeds in the world, has the ability to revolutionize the production of grassfed beef. Devons thrive on grass and will finish (or marble) on grass like no other breed.

Over the past year we have put together a small but striking herd of Pure Red Devon females. These young cows and heifers have the potential to produce some solid, stylish cattle, evidence of which we are seeing with each additional birth. Our intention is to expand the Pure Devon herd and offer quality Devons for sale for breeding purposes.

The foundation of our Devon herd is our herd sire, RED DUDE. RED DUDE (Roffey Q14) is a son of Rotokawa 688, arguably the best bull in the breed, of the famous Rotokawa herd in New Zealand. The Rotokawa herd has been selected for beef production on grass for 70 years.

RED DUDE

.

RED DUDE is a wide-shouldered, deep-chested four year old bull that looks a lot like his sire. RED DUDE is a Frame 2 bull that weighs 1725 lbs. in average condition. He pasture-bred over fifty cows this summer with fabulous conception rates. RED DUDE has been used in the ET program at Roffey Cattle Co. with great success, and one of his progeny, a heifer calf, won her class at the 2009 Great Event.

RED DUDE can be used on Pure Devon cows to produce stylish, thick, showy cattle. He can also be used on commercial cows to produce thick, meaty calves that will finish beautifully on grass. On large-framed cows he will deliver shorter, thicker cattle.
